Before you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect or claim a single point for your education or work history, you must pass a mandatory hurdle: the Migration Skills Assessment.

The Department of Home Affairs does not assess whether your degree matches your job title-designated evaluating authorities do. If you work in information technology, the Australian Computer Society (ACS) evaluates your profile. If you work in marketing, finance, HR, logistics, or consulting, VETASSESS handles your assessment.

A negative assessment halts your PR process, while a misjudged submission can lead the authority to deduct 2 to 6 years of your hard-earned work experience, slashing your PR points score. Here is everything you need to navigate ACS and VETASSESS smoothly.

1. What Is a Skills Assessment and Why Does It Matter?

A Skills Assessment evaluates whether your educational qualifications and employment history meet Australian standards for your nominated OSCA - Occupation Standard Classification for Australia code.

A positive assessment letter proves two things:

  1. Your degree or diploma is comparable to an Australian qualification.

  2. Your employment history was completed at a professional, skilled level and closely aligns with the nominated occupation.

Without this positive outcome, you cannot apply for General Skilled Migration visas (Subclass 189, 190, or 491) or employer-sponsored pathways.

2. ACS (Australian Computer Society): For IT & Tech Professionals

ACS evaluates software engineers, data analysts, systems analysts, cybersecurity specialists, and web developers. The single most critical concept in an ACS assessment is the "Skill Met Date."

How ACS Deducts Work Experience

ACS does not count every year you have worked toward your PR points. Instead, they calculate when you became "skilled" based on the relevance and level of your qualification:

Academic Background

Relevance to Nominated OSCA

ACS Work Experience Deduction

Bachelor's or Higher in ICT

Major in Computing (Closely Related)

2 years deducted within past 10 years

Bachelor's or Higher in ICT

Major in Computing (Not Closely Related)

4 years deducted across work history

Non-ICT Bachelor's Degree

Requires an RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning)

6 years deducted

Diploma / Advanced Diploma

Major in Computing

5 to 6 years deducted

Note: Any work experience completed before your Skill Met Date cannot be claimed for points in your SkillSelect EOI. Claiming deducted years will result in a visa refusal for over-claiming points.

Key Documents Needed for ACS:

  • Passport bio-page.

  • Degree completion certificates and full academic transcripts.

  • Detailed Work Experience Reference Letters: Must be printed on company letterhead and explicitly list your start and end dates, hours worked per week (minimum 20 hrs/week for part-time/full-time recognition), exact designation, and 5–8 bullet points detailing specific daily technical responsibilities.

  • Third-party payment proof (official tax returns, bank statements showing salary credits, and pay slips).

3. VETASSESS: For General & Professional Occupations

VETASSESS assesses over 360 professional occupations, ranging from Marketing Specialists and Management Consultants to Financial Investment Advisers and Construction Project Managers.

VETASSESS groups occupations into distinct categories (Group A through Group F), each requiring specific qualification tiers and post-qualification experience:

  • Group A (e.g., Biotechnologist, Microbiologist, Life Scientists, Actuaries): Requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a field highly relevant to the occupation, plus at least 1 year of highly relevant post-qualification work experience at the required skill level in the last 5 years.

  • Group B (e.g., Marketing Specialists, PR Professionals): Allows for non-relevant degrees, but increases the mandatory post-qualification work experience requirement from 1 year up to 2 or 3 years.

  • Group C & D (e.g., Technicians, Coordinators): Generally requires an Australian Diploma or Certificate IV equivalent, alongside relevant employment experience.

What Causes VETASSESS Rejections?

  1. Generic Job Descriptions: VETASSESS assesses duties, not your company's title. Submitting an HR letter stating "Responsible for marketing campaigns" without detailed campaign execution tasks will result in a negative outcome.

  2. Missing Organizational Charts: For managerial or advisory roles, VETASSESS requires an official organizational chart showing your position, your manager’s title, and the roles of your direct subordinates.

4. Step-by-Step Roadmap to a Positive Assessment

  1. Lock Down the Right OSCA Code: Compare your daily tasks against the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) OSCA unit group descriptions. Do not pick a code based on prestige; choose the one where your verified tasks align at least 65–70%.

  2. Obtain Certified Employment References: Request detailed reference letters from former and current employers. If an employer has closed down or refuses to provide roles and responsibilities, prepare a Statutory Declaration / Affidavit alongside corroborating colleague references.

  3. Organize Financial Corroboration: Gather 3 independent forms of payment proof: Income Tax Returns (ITR / Form 16), official bank statements highlighting salary credits, and corresponding payslips.

  4. Submit and Track: Create an applicant portal profile with ACS or VETASSESS, upload certified PDF scans, and monitor for any Requests for Further Information (RFI).
